A Tropical Dream Far From the Crowds
White sand beaches? Crystal-clear waters? Yes, please! Crowds? No, thanks. That’s why Raja Ampat, a remote Indonesian archipelago, had been on my radar for years.
Getting there isn’t a walk in the park—you’ll need multiple flights, ferries, and boats—but trust me, every minute of the journey is worth it a million times over. Nestled in the heart of the Coral Triangle, Raja Ampat offers a breathtaking escape: stunning islands, mind-blowing views, and marine life so vibrant it feels like stepping into a nature documentary.

Why Visit Raja Ampat?
- To experience a nearly untouched paradise—it’s about as close as you can get to stepping into a travel magazine cover.
- To have your breath stolen by the landscapes—and not just from the humidity!
- To encounter incredible wildlife—manta rays, reef sharks, and birds of paradise (yes, the actual birds of paradise!).
- To challenge your comfort zone—no luxury here, just raw nature and simple living.
- To meet the warmest people—the locals welcome you like family.
- To feel like Robinson Crusoe—minus the survival struggles (homestays provide fresh fish and banana fritters!).
- To leave with lifelong memories—and a strong urge to return, despite the distance.
My favorite places to explore
Kri island – The most popular spot
As one of the most popular islands in Raja Ampat, Kri offers charming overwater bungalows lining its shores, providing a true tropical getaway experience. For breathtaking views, a short hike to the island’s highest point rewards adventurers with a stunning panorama of the turquoise waters and neighboring islands.
Snorkeling near the jetty is a must, where you’ll find vibrant corals and even baby sharks swimming in the shallows. Heads up—shallow waters mean careful finning unless you want to be that person who breaks the coral 😉!
One of the island’s highlights is Cape Kri, a world-famous dive site known for its astonishing marine life and record-breaking fish diversity. It holds the title for the most fish species spotted in a single dive. No pressure!
Mansuar island – An Underwater Heaven
Mansuar is where stunning reefs meet laid-back island life. Below the surface, it’s an underwater wonderland—think turtles, reef sharks, and a ridiculous amount of fish. Snorkeling? Just step outside your bungalow, and you’re in. Diving? Some of the best spots are right here.
💡 Tip: Watch out for the current! We got so caught up in the underwater magic that we didn’t notice the current pulling us straight to the other side of the beach. Let’s just say getting back took a bit more effort than we expected!
As for the bungalows, we had our own little seaside cabin with dreamy ocean views—pure paradise. We tried exploring the island, but a broken bridge and a battalion of mosquitoes cut our adventure short (nature’s subtle hint to “go back to the beach”). There’s also a small village where you can meet the locals, soak in the culture, and maybe swap travel stories.
Pam (Fam) islands – Your Private Paradise
The Fam Islands are like something straight out of a postcard—tiny, pristine islands surrounded by dazzling blue lagoons and dramatic limestone karsts. While Fam is a bit remote and secluded, staying here puts you in a prime spot to quickly access places like Rufa’s Island, Piaynemo, and more. If you’ve ever dreamed of having your own private island, this is as close as it gets! We were completely alone, with only a handful of locals (we met around four people during our entire stay).
The bungalows were basic but perfect for kicking back and relaxing. And the beach? The views? Absolutely breathtaking.
We even ventured on a jungle trek with a local ‘guide’ and his trusty machete (no trail, just pure adventure). And of course, don’t miss the snorkeling—some of the best manta spots are just a short boat ride away!
Rufa Island, Piaynemo & Melissa’s Garden
Rufa Island has those secluded beaches you’ve always dreamed of, plus some awesome snorkeling spots. There’s a little hike to the viewpoint, so leave the flip-flops at home or in the boat (locals might go barefoot, but trust me, you’ll want better shoes for this). The view is definitely worth the trek!
Then there’s Piaynemo—famous for its jaw-dropping viewpoint, with dramatic karst formations rising from the sea. It’s like the Raja Ampat version of a postcard, and yep, it rivals Wayag. A short walk gets you to this incredible scene.
For the ultimate underwater experience, hit Melissa’s Garden. This place is a snorkeler’s dream, with vibrant coral gardens that draw all kinds of fish, creating an underwater paradise you’ll want to explore for hours.
💡 Tip: Ask your homestay to arrange a day tour for you—it’s the best way to see everything! For maximum convenience, staying nearby on Fam Island is ideal.
Wayag – The Dream Destination (still a dream)
Wayag is the crown jewel of Raja Ampat, famous for its towering karst islands and those insane shades of blue you only see in travel brochures. Climbing one of its rocky peaks gives you a panoramic view of the maze of islets below—absolutely unreal. With its untouched beauty and rich marine life, it’s a dream for adventurers and photographers alike.
But here’s the thing—Wayag is pretty remote, so it takes some serious time to get there. We were on a tight schedule, so we had to skip it for other islands, but we’ve seen some jaw-dropping photos and heard nothing but rave reviews. So, if you’ve got the time, definitely make it happen!
Just a heads-up: there’s no accommodation, so plan ahead if you’re thinking of staying overnight.
💡 Tip: If you’re short on time like we were, don’t worry—Piaynemo offers a similar viewpoint with just as stunning views!
Waigeo Island – The largest Islands
Waigeo, the largest island in Raja Ampat, is like a paradise on steroids. Think dense rainforests, hidden waterfalls, and coastlines that will make you want to move in. But it’s not just about the beaches and marine life—Waigeo is home to the rare Wilson’s bird-of-paradise, so birdwatchers, this one’s for you!
With local villages, cultural vibes, and quick access to nearby islands, Waigeo perfectly balances adventure with relaxation. Whether you’re into jungle treks or just chilling by the beach, it’s got a little something for everyone.
Activities for the Adventurous
Diving – Underwater Wonderland (with a side of caution)
The underwater life here is absolutely mind-blowing—one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. We went diving with a local dive master recommended by our homestay, but, well, let’s just say it didn’t go as smoothly as we hoped. Safety rules? Not exactly top of mind. We ended up cutting it short for peace of mind.
Here’s my advice: go with a well-established diving center. Sure, you’ll pay a little more, but at least you’ll know they’re following safety protocols (and that’s worth the extra bucks). And remember to book in advance—being in a remote spot means things fill up quickly, and options are limited.

Snorkeling – No need to Scuba Dive to see Magic
Honestly, you don’t need to dive to have an epic underwater experience. The fish are literally everywhere—not just deep down with the divers! There are so many, and trust me, don’t forget to look around. My friend got totally mesmerized by some tiny fish and completely missed a couple of sharks swimming right by her (like, she could’ve touched them). You can spot all kinds of marine life: manta rays, sharks, turtles, vibrant corals, and fish galore. Some spots require a boat ride, while others? Just swim straight from the beach and you’re already surrounded by wonders.
My favorite snorkeling spots:
- Near Mansuar (depart from the beach or jetty)
- Near Fam Islands “Snorkeller’s Paradise”
- Kri jetty (pretty shallow, but the water is so clear you can spot baby sharks right from the jetty)
- Melissa’s Garden
💡 Tips:
- Bring your own snorkel gear!
- Watch out for the current, especially if you’re heading out from the beach. No boats to pick you up, so you’ll be swimming back against it—definitely not the easiest swim.

Hiking – Jungle Adventures

Hiking in Raja Ampat is a bit, well, limited. There aren’t many established trails, and wandering aimlessly in the jungle? Let’s just say it can get real tricky and potentially dangerous. But no worries—we found a local with a machete to help us navigate through the dense jungle. Pro tip: you can wander a little, but once you venture too far, it’s like the jungle’s saying, “Yeah, not today.” The terrain gets dense and steep real quick.
If you’re not into getting lost in the jungle, the coastal areas are much safer for a little stroll. A bit of sand, and you’re good to go!
Our Favorite “Paths” (aka the ones we stumbled upon or made up)
- Kri High Viewpoint: You can tackle the whole trek from north to south or, like us, just find your way through the trees and make your own path to the top for that epic view!
- Kri Coastal Walk & Sand Patches: Follow the beach and any sandy spot you can find, but heads up—some sections require you to wade through water or, just dive right in and swim!
- Mansuar: At the back of the village, there’s a path that cuts through the jungle and could take you across the island. Unfortunately, the bridge was broken, and the mosquitoes were out for blood, so we decided to turn back and embrace the beach vibes instead. The path was supposed to take us to the other side of the island, though—guess we’ll save that adventure for next time!
💡 Tips:
- We always used Maps.me to oriented ourselves to avoid getting lost. But not all trails visible on maps.me are visible in real life!
- Raja Ampat’s tourism office also offers organized hiking tours. Check their website for full details if you’re up for some serious jungle trekking! Raja Ampat trekking: Waigeo’s remote Mayalibit Bay rainforests
Bird watching – A Winged Paradise Awaits
Even if you’re not a hardcore birdwatcher, I still highly recommend it—it’s a real privilege to witness the paradise birds here (some species you can only find in this part of the world!). You can go with a guide (definitely recommended for the paradise birds) or just enjoy spotting a variety of birds in your daily surroundings.
Guided Tour: Wake up early to spot two types of paradise birds! The adventure starts with a nighttime walk (bring a flashlight!) to the first hide. Once you’re settled in, you’ll wait for the birds to make their grand entrance at sunrise. Afterward, head to the second hide where you can watch the Wilson’s bird-of-paradise, which is busy cleaning up a little clearing in hopes of attracting a female.
It’s not cheap (600.000 IDR or ~50$/pax for 2 type of birds), but trust me, even if you’re not a bird fanatic, it’s totally worth it. And hey, birds are wild creatures, so don’t be disappointed if they’re a little shy that day. The local guides are total experts, though, so you’ll most likely see them daily!
Relaxing – Contemplate life in paradise
Sometimes, the best activity is simply doing nothing. Raja Ampat offers the perfect backdrop for some serious relaxation—whether it’s lounging on pristine beaches, enjoying the view from your bungalow, or unwinding in the peaceful atmosphere of local villages. Take in the stunning landscapes, listen to the soothing sound of the waves, and let yourself fully disconnect. No rush, no agenda—just pure bliss in one of the most serene places on Earth.
Practical tips

👗 Packing List
- Light, breathable clothes (weather is hot & humid!)
- Snorkel gear (a must!)

- Reef-safe sunscreen and/or UV water close! Trust me nothing less design than an intense sunburn.
- Patience😉—because this trip is an adventure!
✈️How to Get there
Getting to this exotic paradise is an adventure in itself—buckle up for the journey! First, you’ll need to fly to one of Indonesia’s major international hubs (like Bali or Jakarta), and then catch a domestic flight to Sorong Airport. From there, take a cab to the pier (or use the Gojek app for a cheaper ride with a fixed price—about 25k IDR ~2$).
Next, hop on the ferry from Sorong to Waisai (around 150k IDR per person ~12$), you can book your ticket once you arrive at the Sorong pier. In Waisai you’ll also need to pay an entry fee for the park (about 300k IDR per person ~24$).
From Waisai, you’ll catch a long boat to your island destination. Be sure to arrange this last leg with your accommodation, and a boat driver will be waiting to take you.
To travel between islands, your accommodation will also organize the boat rides (costing between 1 million to 2 million IDR depending on the distance). It can get pricey, so team up with other tourists to share the cost!
Here are some example of prices for island transfers:
- Wasai to Fam : 2 millions IDR ~160$
- Fam to Kri : 1 million IDR ~80$
- Kri to Wasai 1 million IDR ~80$

Let’s be real
Raja Ampat blew my mind—crystal-clear waters, surreal landscapes, and an underwater world straight out of a dream. But let’s not sugarcoat it—this place throws a few curveballs your way (some delightful, others… let’s just say, character-building).
First up, getting there? Buckle up. It’s a journey, not a quick getaway. We’re talking flights, ferries, and boats before you even set foot on your first slice of paradise. But hey, the best places are never easy to reach, right?
Luxury? Forget it. Think bucket showers, a few hours of electricity, and Wi-Fi so rare it feels like a myth. But that’s part of the magic—you trade comforts for something way better: untouched nature and the kind of sunsets that make you question reality.
Oh, and Kri Island? It’s got mice. Lots of them. Unless you fancy sharing your midnight snack, keep your treats well out of reach unless you want tiny, uninvited dinner guests.
Raja Ampat isn’t about fancy dinners or shopping sprees. No cafés, no cute little boutiques—just homestays, nature, and the rhythm of island life. If you’re all about slow travel, this is your haven. If you need a bustling nightlife scene… well, you might want to reconsider. Now, if you’re planning to chase islands doing all kinds of activities, be prepared for some costs. You’ll need a private boat for each trip, and that can add up fast. My advice? Team up with other travelers to split the cost!
But here’s the real magic: the local hospitality will steal your heart. On Christmas Day, our homestay host invited us to join their celebration. Next thing we knew, we were zipping around on scooters, hopping between family and friends’ houses. Each stop had amazing food (the beef stew? Unreal), cold drinks, and endless smiles. No shared language, yet laughter and warmth bridged the gap. It was one of those rare travel moments that stays with you forever. It was truly unforgettable.
Raja Ampat is changing fast. It’s growing, with more options for accommodations and activities, but that also means more crowds. Still, it’s a place that leaves you speechless, no matter how many people are around.
After a long, exhausting journey back home, I thought I’d be done with Raja Ampat. The world is big, right? I mean, who goes back to the same place? A week later, guess what? I was already plotting my returm. What can I say? Paradise is just that hard to resist!
