Thanks to fellow travel bloggers, I stumbled upon Khao Sok as a destination for the first time just half a year ago. Honestly, I was shocked it wasn’t already on my radar since I’m always hunting for new places to explore. But the photos were so stunning that it immediately made my list. After a few months of procrastination (because, you know, life), I finally took some leave and booked my flight, and I can safely say—it was totally worth it.
Why Visit

Khao Sok is a magical lake surrounded by towering karst formations and one of Thailand’s oldest lush rainforests, home to an impressive array of wildlife. It offers a serene vibe compared to the hustle and bustle of places like Phuket and the other islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Trust me, it’s a refreshing change of pace.
Best Things to Do
- Longtail boat tour around the Cheow Lan Lake & cave exploration: A classic must-do. I mean, who doesn’t love a little adventure while gliding across crystal-clear waters? You will be able to enjoy the beauty of the karstic formation surrounding you and take some beautiful shot with reflection on the lake. Check this tour: Cheow Lan Lake and Emerald Pool Tour.

- Swim at Emerald Pool and rowboat ride: The short boat ride was a very good surprise as you row on a lake inlet so close to the rainforest. Very enjoyable.

- Spend the night on a floating cabin: A once-in-a-lifetime experience. There’s nothing quite like waking up to the mist rolling off the water while surrounded by jaw-dropping nature. You will be able relax and enjoy nature just out of your room door literally ! Check this hotel: 500 Rai Floating Resort
- Kayak on the lake to spot wild elephants: Don’t get too excited like I did—no elephants this time, but hey, nature doesn’t always deliver on demand!

- Jungle Safari: Think monkeys, rainforest hike, bamboo rafts, and a dip in the river. But, heads up the moose make it slippery, and that current can be a bit wild. Keep your balance! Check this tour: Waterfalls and Wildlife Half-Day Trek

- Night Safari: Perfect for those looking to spice things up with a little nocturnal wildlife action. Just remember—it’s dark out there! You will discover a full ecosystem and wildlife that wake up at night. Check this tour: Night Safari Adventure
Suggested Itinerary
- 2 days / 2 night in Khao Sok—just enough to soak in the natural beauty.
- Combine with Khao Lak for 2 days—because who doesn’t love an excuse to explore more of Thailand?
- Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, combine with Koh Phi Phi for 2 days—you’ll have the perfect balance of nature and island life.
Practical Tips
- 📆 Best time to visit: November to April. Honestly, the weather is pretty unpredictable, so be prepared for the occasional rainstorm.
- 🏡 Accommodation: I recommend staying one night in a floating resort or in Khao Sok Village to cut down on cost. If you want more flexibility, Khao Lak works as a good base too. But expect to travel a bit more.
- Floating resort: 500 Rai Floating Resort
- Khao Sok village & around: Art’s Riverview Lodge or Magical Mountain View Resort
- Khao Lak: La Flora Khao Lak
- 🍜 Food: Thai food is always on point, and it won’t break the bank. Seriously, just eat everything.
- 👗What to pack:
- Mosquito repellent (They love me, so don’t forget it).
- Sunscreen (unless you’re planning to get sun-kissed in a different way).
- A power bank (because who doesn’t need one, right?).
- A headlamp or flashlight (because dark jungles = adventure).
- 🚗 Getting around: You’ve got options: mini-van, cab, or organized tours. Check those day tours:
- ✈️ Getting there: For those of us in Singapore, it’s a breeze—direct flight to Phuket (1h45), then a 3 hours drive to Khao Sok Village. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway or part of a longer itinerary.
Let’s Be Real

Alright, let’s get honest here: I went in October, and guess what? I was hit by a typhoon. So yeah, the weather wasn’t ideal. But even with the rain, the views were still breathtaking. Mother Nature was clearly trying to remind me that I’m not in charge of the weather.
The karst formations are kind of a “staple” sight in this region, but what I really appreciated was that Khao Sok wasn’t overcrowded—there’s room to breathe and enjoy the beauty without fighting for space.
Also, there’s a solid mix of activities, so you’ll never get bored. Yes, some were a bit on the pricier side for my wallet, but there are enough options to keep it affordable without missing out.
I was surprised to learn that an organized tour doesn’t really cost much more (if anything at all) than trying to do it all yourself. And, let’s be real, it’s kinda nice to let someone else take the reins for once.
A little downside? On one of my day trips, we had lunch at a floating resort, and the activities there were limited. I had to hustle a bit to secure a kayak, and not everyone got a chance to enjoy it. A little more organization here would’ve been nice, but hey, that’s part of the adventure, right?
The boat tour could’ve been longer too—like, I could’ve easily stayed another hour on the lake! But you know what? When it’s good, it’s good. Why stop when you’re loving it?
Khao Sok is a destination that has all the good stuff: easy access, incredible nature, good food, and super welcoming locals. Traveling in Thailand is always a breeze (well, almost always). It’s an easy getaway, especially when you’re looking for a chill yet adventurous experience. Highly recommend it—just maybe not during typhoon season.
Happy travels!
